Rough Start to a Packed Day

I did not sleep well at all last night. After going to bed, I stayed awake for over 2 hours before I actually fell asleep. Through the rest of the night, I woke up several times, so I don’t think I got much more than 4 hours of sleep. And of course that was the night before my busiest day of activities and classes (the first of which starts in twenty minutes) of the week. So in addition to not being able to sleep in like I could have on another day, I won’t have a chance to nap between classes like I would like to. If all goes well (meaning I don’t doze off in my classes) the first time I will get a chance to sleep is going to be between 9:30 and 10:00 tonight. At least I will be able to (hopefully) sleep well tonight, but in the meantime I’m praying that God will help me get through the day.

Wasting Time

Today I got home from class around 2:10, and had about two and a half hours before I had to leave again for horn dinner, so I planned to get some work done. I have a chem lab tomorrow to prepare for, a good bit German work, and wanted to make at least two blog posts (not including this one). So what did I do? I watched YouTube videos for almost two hours. And didn’t do any work. Until around 4:30, which was too late to do very much. And now I need to do all of that work. So much for a productive afternoon.

Run-On-Day

Today, I woke up, brushed my teeth, ate breakfast, got to my writing class on time and talked about sea level rise, finished my chemistry homework, picked up a book from one the university libraries, practiced horn for about a half hour, had my mind blown about wave properties of matter and electron orbitals in chem lecture, ate a salad and a cookie for lunch because the other lines in the dining hall were too long, had a horn lesson and was told that I don’t play loudly enough, finally received my German book that I’ve been waiting for for two weeks, talked to my grandmother about my grandparents visiting in November, went back to my dorm to get ready for rehearsals, went to horn choir rehearsal and struggled with Lowell Shaw’s Frippery No. 1, met my faculty advisor and talked for a few minutes, finally straightened out a problem with my schedule about not being enrolled in my chem class, went to horn dinner and ate an ice cream and cookie sandwich, went to marching band rehearsal and worked on music for our next halftime show in a week and a half, walked back to my dorm, and then hung out with some of my suitemates for a little bit.

So yeah, it was a busy day. But it was also really good. Hoping tomorrow is just as good, even if it is a little less busy.

Busy Days

Well, the last two days were a lot busier than I thought they were going to be, so I didn’t get to post as much as I wanted to. Friday was a normal day of school. I had German at noon, but needed to meet my teacher quickly before hand. Long story short, my book still isn’t here, so I need to get copies of the work from hers. It’s really frustrating, so my book had better be here soon… German went pretty well, and I had to eat a quick lunch before the first meeting of my chem lab section at 2:00. We didn’t have an actual lab to do this week, but we talked about the class, grading, science, and other fun things like that. That went until about 4:00 (it’s scheduled until 5:30, but fortunately it doesn’t always go that late), so I had a bit more time before marching band rehearsal.

I met C, one of the other mellophones in my section on the bus on the way to N dining hall. Unfortunately we had both forgotten that N is closed on Friday afternoons after lunch, so they didn’t have any food. We ended up eating at a pasta and noodle place that was still open, which was really good, but also pretty filling. Starting marching practice on a full stomach is not fun. Rehearsal went really well. We recorded ourselves a little bit, which was very loud (I had seven trumpet players within six feet around me…) and a little exhausting, but good. After that we ran drill for the halftime show a little bit, but that wasn’t too bad. It poured at last Saturday’s football game, so we didn’t march our show, and just recycled it for yesterday’s game, so we didn’t have a ton of work to do.

After getting out of rehearsal, I came back to my dorm and was able to video chat with N (my girlfriend, not the dining hall) for a little while. Because she had a game yesterday too, and needed to be up early (a lot earlier than I needed to be), she needed to go to bed before too long. I threw a load of laundry in the washing machine, and then went to hang out with some friends from the mellophone section, who, like me, choose not to drink. We talked for a while, and I came back to my dorm a little after midnight. And then I needed to finish doing laundry. So I was up pretty late that night.

Yesterday, I woke up really late (by my standards), and after breakfast immediately needed to change into marching rehearsal clothes and catch the bus to the band building. Rehearsal went from 11:45 to about 1:15, and then we had lunch, changed into uniform, and headed over to the stadium. The game was okay, and you can read more about that here. We finished around 7:00, and after eating a little dinner (Chick-fil-A provided by the band), I went and spent the evening with D, one of the members of the mellophone section. He’s originally a clarinetist, but can also play several other instruments really well, including flute and piccolo, which he’s started playing outside the dining halls on grounds to make some money. It’s pretty funny. We talked for a while, and then I came back to my dorm.

After catching up with N for a while, I spent some time with my suitemate J and some of the people in the suites above us. I watched a little bit of The Great Gatsby with them before deciding I should probably go to bed. Thankfully I didn’t have any laundry to do.

Ylvis – The Fox

Sorry, I had to. Especially since the only other things I have stuck in my head are stand tunes and drum beats…

Waking Up Late

This morning one of my few fears I have had about college was realized. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have a writing class at 8:00 in the morning, and when I woke up this morning, it was already 8:10. After panicking for a couple of seconds, I got ready as quickly as possible, and was out the door by 8:14. I got to my class by 8:23, which, by the way, is a small, eighteen person seminar (no quietly sneaking in the back), and was able to integrate into the conversation fairly quickly, thankfully. I missed less than a third of class, so it could have been a lot worse, but I certainly hope it never happens again. Also, I need to get an alarm clock.

Anyway, now I need to face one of my other “fears” about college: doing laundry.

Cicadas

Besides pictures and the molted shells, I had never seen a real cicada before this summer. And because this is a cicada summer I am seeing a lot of them around grounds of my university, and I’ve been surprised at how large they are. For those of you that have never seen a cicada, they are big. It isn’t uncommon for me to see at least one three to four inch cicada just laying on the sidewalk on one of my walks to class or rehearsal. It also surprises me that more people aren’t scared of them. Not only are they big, but they’re pretty ugly and gross looking. If I were afraid of bugs, I think cicadas would be pretty close to the top of the list (probably right below bees).

Second First Post

Wow. It’s my second day working on this and I’m already having the “I should blog, but I don’t know what to blog about” problem. It’s not that I don’t have any ideas. I have tons of ideas. Rather, it’s just that most of those posts are going take a bit longer to write, so I’m saving them for later when I have more free time. Instead, today I’ll write I little about this blog, considering I didn’t in my first post. And by the way, if you don’t understand Java, you didn’t miss much in the first post.

I meant to start this blog over two months ago. I had been thinking about it for a while, and knew that I wanted to start one, but there were a lot of specifics (title, theme, layout, etc.) that I hadn’t ironed out yet. Still planning, I missed my first planned launch date of July 1st, and then again in August because I was out of town. Finally, after about a week after moving into my dorm for my first year of undergraduate education, I put my foot down and started. And this is the result. Not so impressive so far, I know, but I hope it gets a little more interesting.

So, what do I plan to do on this blog? My main goal is to post at least once a day. I may not have much time some days, so those posts will be relatively short, but I still hope to get a little bit of “fun” writing done every day. My aim is to make one or two “longer” posts per week. In addition to that, I’m planning to add a new post to the “I’ve Been Listening To…” thread each day, just with a song that I’ve, well, been listening to a lot or had stuck in my head that day. I like a lot of different types of music, so you may not like everything I choose, but I invite you to listen nonetheless.

That’s about all I can think to write about the blog write now, and I should probably get working on the video lectures I need to watch for tomorrow’s chem class, so I’m going to go do that.
